Yorkshire Terrier
Size Information
The Yorkie Standard says that the breed must weigh less than 7 pounds to
compete in the conformation ring, and show dogs typically weigh between 4
and 7 pounds.  This is the breed standard for
show dogs only.

Some of the most successful show breeders even end up with some slightly
larger Yorkie's, even though their mothers or fathers are dainty little
champions.

Many Yorkie's end up weighing in at 8, 12 or occasionally 15 pounds.  For
some homes, the larger dogs are a better choice.  The bigger dogs are less
breakable, and they have less to fear from a childs overly enthusiastic playing.

Don't necessarily look for the
tiniest Yorkie you can find.  One of the
breed's major problems is liver shunts.  The most common early indication of
this is low energy and failure to grow.  For some reason, miniaturization
frequently leads to health problems.

Don't fall for
labels like "teacups", "tinies", or "minis", those are just
advertising gimmicks designed to sell puppies.  No classifications by size exist
for this breed.

Please pick up a copy of a Yorkshire Terrier breed book from your local pet
store for more information on this breed.  If you are purchasing a Yorkie, this
is a must.
